"It's not just about music; it's about youth development and giving kids a sense of belonging."
That's how Goshen College strings teacher Sofia Sanchez describes her school's free music education program for at-risk kids, which has been around for 10 years.
The Elkhart County El Sistema ('ECoSistema') program is rooted in the global El Sistema movement that began in Venezuela and is dedicated to providing the youth free music education opportunities, reports the Elkhart Truth.
The name means Elkhart County El Sistema.
The program was able to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving children an outlet when other activities were unavailable.
"We're committed to this community and passionate about ensuring every child has access to this program," Sanchez says.
"It's not just about music; it's about youth development and giving kids a sense of belonging," she adds.
