"We are not just reacting to the future of nursing, we are defining it,"Trish Baise, chief nursing executive of East Carolina University's health system, writes on the university's website.
That's because the ECU Health Medical Center is one of just 11 hospitals in the country to have a Magnet designation for exemplary nursing practice from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
The honor is the third in a row for the medical center, which is located in Greenville, NC, the News & Observer reports.
"Less than 10% of hospitals in the United States have Magnet designation and ECU Health Medical Center is one of only 11 in North Carolina," Baise writes.
"This achievement is the celebration of our collaborative work, but it is not the destination," she continues.
"We are just beginning our efforts to propel nursing at ECU Health to unprecedented heights, making it the ever-changing health care industry."
To achieve this, Baise and her team set out to find a way to create and sustain a culture of nursing excellence.
Among the ideas they came up with: a structured, evidence-based nurse residency program that pairs new nurses with experienced mentors; an "inclusive approach" to re- Designing Advancing Nursing Practice and Innovative Advancing Nursing Practice;
