The Australian government is planning to end youth detention as we know it, in favor of rehabilitation instead, the Guardian reports.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Liberal National Partywhich is in power in Queenslandplans to end youth detention in favor of a 12-month intensive post-detention rehabilitation program.
"The LNP's Detention with Purpose will ensure detention is not only about getting dangerous offenders off the street for community safety but also delivers intensive rehabilitation while they're serving their sentence," says a government minister.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the plan will "stop the youth detention system becoming a merry-go-round for the growing cohort of serious repeat youth offenders," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports. Read the Entire Article
