Calgary Launches Canada'S First Downtown 5G Test Environment

If you have an idea for a new way to use 5G technology, the City of Calgary has just the place for you.

It's created the 5G Discovery Zone, which is designed to allow researchers, developers, and companies to come up with new applications and technologies that take advantage of the fifth-generation wireless technology.

"When the City of Calgary first started pursuing the idea of collaborating with Wireless Service providers back in 2019, the goal wasn't to be the first 5G downtown test environment," Erin Chrusch, leader of the city's Business and Local Economy Team, tells Cities Today.

But "the city's commitment to fostering innovation and supporting local businesses, along with its ambition to solve urban challenges through technology, naturally led to it becoming a leader in 5G testing in Canada."

The zone, a collaboration between Rogers Communications, Platform Calgary, and Calgary Economic Development, will offer three programs: Connect & Test, which will accept proposals; Connect & Test Plus, which will provide mentoring and engineering support; and Themed Challenges, which will focus on solutions related to transportation, public safety, and climate and the environment.

A city spokesperson tells Cities Today that winning ideas will receive funding to develop their Proof of Concept within the 5G Discovery Zone. Read the Entire Article
